CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS IN South Asian Countries
For the purpose of deepening cultural exchanges between China and South Asian countries and promoting the localization of Chinese language teaching, Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as “Hanban”) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship: Professional Development for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries” to sponsor students from South Asia to study Chinese in dozens of universities (hereinafter referred to as “host universities” ), who shall return to their home countries to teach Chinese language with the sponsorship of Hanban.
1.One-academic-year Intensive Chinese Language Learning + Four-academic-year Education of Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL):
This category provides a sponsorship for 5 academic years. Applicant should hold a high school diploma or above. At the end of the Intensive Chinese Language course the degree scholarship applicants are subject to annual academic performance review. Only those who achieve outstanding records in academic and Chinese language proficiency (a minimum score of 180 in HSK3 Test, and a minimum score of 60 in HSKK Test (Beginner Level)) are entitled to a full scholarship for the following year.
3.Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students:
This category provides a sponsorship for 2 academic years. Applicant should own a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test, and a minimum score of 50 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). Applicant who is able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon finishing the study from designated working institutions is preferred. The degree scholarship program applicants are subject to annual academic performance review. Only those who achieve outstanding records in academic and Chinese language proficiency (a minimum score of 180 in HSK6 Test, and a minimum score of 70 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level)) are entitled to a full scholarship for the following year
2.Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL) Students:
This category provides a sponsorship for 4 academic years. Applicant should hold a high school diploma or above, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and a minimum score of 40 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). The degree scholarship program applicants are subject to annual academic performance review. Only those who achieve outstanding records in academic and Chinese language proficiency (a minimum score of 180 in HSK5 Test, and a minimum score of 50 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level)) are entitled to a full scholarship for the following year
Applicants should log onto the Scholarship website, fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form”, and attach the electronic files of the following materials:
1.Photocopy of Passport。
2.Photocopies of HSK and HSKK score reports。
3.Highest education diploma attained(scheduled graduation proof or official proof of student status. Non-Chinese or non-English documents should be notarized。
4.Reference letter and letter of commitment. The MTCSOL Scholarship applicants are required to submit two reference letters from professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English) and a written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation. College students majored in Chinese in countries with no Confucius Institutes established shall submit a reference letter signed and issued by the university President。
5.Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China。
6.Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions in their countries shall submit award proof and a reference letter from the Chinese Embassy (or Consulate) in the competition area。
7.Those applying for scholarship of MTCSOL are required to provide the agreement signed with the Confucius Institute or the institute which they will be working for。
8.Other materials required by host institutes。
1.A round trip flight of economic class shall be provided every academic year, covering the shortest distance between the residing place of the scholarship recipient’s home country and the Chinese host university where he/she is studying。
2.The recipients will be exempt from tuition fees, on-campus accommodation fee, and be provided with monthly living allowance of CNY2,500 per month for Bachelor’s degree and CNY3,000 per month for Master’s degree。
3.Hanban will support the graduates to teach Chinese in their home countries for five years, during which their salary shall be paid by Hanban。
1.If the name on the application form is inconsistent with the name on the scanned passport file, or relevant documents are incomplete, the application will be invalid。
2.If the scholarship recipient cannot register at the host university within the stipulated time, applicants should seek approval at least 15 days prior to the registration day with a written explanation. For those who cannot complete registration without any reason, the scholarship will be cancelled. Applicants will not apply for the scholarship again。
3.Scholarship and admission will be cancelled for those who cannot pass the health examination。

Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens from South Asia and be in good health, aged below 35 , among which in-service Chinese language teachers shall be aged below 45 and applicants for Bachelor’s degree shall be aged below 20. Preference will be given to South Asian students studying in China or winners of the "Chinese Bridge” Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and High School Students
Applicants shall apply at their own choice and sign agreement with Hanban, committing to teach Chinese language when they return to their home countries for at least 5 years
From the issue date of the Procedures, applicants may log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, set up an individual account, read information on host universities and majors, complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form and the Agreement with their signature (in PDF format) online。
Confucius Institutes (independently set-up Confucius Classrooms), overseas Chinese test centers, educational and cultural offices (sections) of Chinese Embassies (Consulates), host institutes and institutions of higher education in those countries with no Confucius Institutes are entrusted by Hanban as the recommending institutions. The recommending institutions shall examine the qualification and application materials of applicants, and submit the list of recommended applicants to Hanban。
Host institutes are responsible for reviewing the qualification of applicants and submitting the proposed enrollment name list of qualified candidates to Hanban。
Hanban will organize an expert panel to make the final selection, and publish the name list of successful applicants on the Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn). Hanban will also inform the host institutes and the recommending institutions, and the recommending institutions will inform the applicants。
The host institutes will post “Admission Letter”, “Enrollment Instructions”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China" (JW202 Form) and other related materials to successful applicants through their recommending
