On the Resultative Small Clause Analysis of Resultative Verb Compound in Chinese — A Reply to XIE Duquan and GUO Yingke

  • The paper mainly discusses the problems with resultative small clause analysis as pointed out in “Comment on the Small Clause Approach to Chinese Resultative Constructions and a New Model” XIE Duquan and GUO Yingke. It is found that Xie & Guo have some misunderstandings about the theory it criticises. In the resultative small clause analysis, the subject of the small clause does not have any thematic relationship with the matrix verb, but only subjectpredicate relationship with the predicate of the small clause. This line of analysis explains the syntactic behavior of Chinese resultative verb compound (RVC) and does not have the problem of overgeneration. In addition, it offers a unified account of the transitive form, intransitive form and BA construction of RVCs.
