When does Language Reformulation Start in Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting: The Serial View or the Parallel View?

Within the context of the debate between the serial view and the parallel view，the present study investigates the time course of language reformulation in the process of interpreting.We conducted a selfpaced reading experiment among student interpreters to compare the reading process of Chinese under two conditions: reading for repetition and reading for interpreting.In both reading processes, no facilitation of Chinese transliterated words but wrapup effect occurred, which indicates that the two comprehension processes are not essentially different.The result suggests that for the unbalanced ChineseEnglish bilinguals, source language comprehension and language reformulation may not proceed in a parallel but a serial fashion in ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting.
