On the Connotation and Significance of the Spirit of the Translator

  • The spirit of the translator refers to the ethical and professional features embodied by or generalized from excellent translators both past and present, such as seeking the truth, aiming at utility, dedication, patriotism, keeping learning and forging ahead, cooperation, being modest, pursuing beauty and so on.The introduction of the spirit of the translator as a key term in translation studies is instrumental in enriching theoretical discourses on translation, differentiating it from similar terms like translation spirit, triggering off related research topics, improving translation quality, shaping the image of the translator, and constructing a favorable translational eco-environment.In view of the ethical dimension of the spirit of the translator, it can also be implanted into translation education, especially the construction of translation courses with ethical elements, in order to help cultivate more morally and professionally qualified translators.
