ERPs Evidence for Semantic Processing of Chinese Gapping Verbs: Also on the Chinese Verb Gapping Sentences

  • Gapping has been the focus of discussion in the literature, but whether there are verb gapping sentences in Chinese remains a problem, and the research on its processing mechanism is insufficient. This paper contrasts the processing mechanisms of two kinds of Chinese verb gapping sentences with inconsistent antecedent verbs by neuroelectrophysiology technique. The experimental results show that there are significant differences in the components induced by the target words in the gapping sentences. The article proposes that the P200 may be associated with the recognition of lexical semantic information or verb association, and the P600 may be related to integration difficulties or semantic conflicts. The gap of the Chinese verb gapping sentence has the semantic processing of the gapping verb, and the semantic reduction of the gapping verb depends on the antecedent. And it also takes part in the semantic integration of sentences in late processing. The research demonstrates that there are verb gapping sentences in Chinese from the perspective of semantic processing.
