College English Teaching and the Cultivation of International Talents

  • The ultimate aim of teaching English in Chinese colleges and universities should be the cultivation of international talents, with different focuses at different schools or with different majors. College English teaching in the new era should be positioned to serve the needs of national development and to satisfy the individual needs of the students, taking into consideration the requirements set out in the New Curriculum Standards for Senior School Students released by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2018. In addition to the Guidelines for College English, the MOE should issue a document for teaching foreign languages at universities, specifying the requirements for course design and the students'expected levels of competence for different schools, which, in turn, should set their own specific requirements for different majors in terms of their levels of English proficiency in accordance with their course requirements, etc., based on students' entry level and graduation requirements. In view of these, colleges and universities should reevaluate and redesign their English courses, modes of teaching, teaching materials, teacher training and course evaluation, etc.
