A Preliminary Poetic and Genealogical Study of the 100-Year History of Chinese Translation of Western Poems Since 1919

  • This paper examines the history of Chinese translation of western poetry in the past 100 years in terms of poetics and genealogy. From the perspective of poetics, the study scrutinizes the poetic gains and losses in the translation at issue, while from the perspective of genealogy, it analyzes the "conditions of possibility" of specific historical events of the poetry translation during this period. One of Foucault's research approaches is "problemization," encouraging reexamination of institutionalized consensuses, while the typical methodology of poetics is the linguistic analysis of literary texts, dealing with the constructive mechanism of poetic beauty.By combining the two, it is found that a series of well-established understandings concerning this history cannot withstand the dual challenge of poetics and genealogy, and some related issues seem yet to be reevaluated.
