Reflections on Confucian Classics “Going-out” from the Perspective of Global Discourse Diversity

  • The long hegemony of western modern discourse system which emphasizes scientific and analytic rationality has led to a global dilemma of discourse monotony. Though western philosophers have performed profound critique of and reflection on the problem, alternatives are yet to be found. Traditional Chinese discourse paradigm, formed in Confucian classics and their commentaries and featuring holistic and "change" mode of thinking, moral orientation towards exemplary personality for world service, and historicized and contextualized meaning interpretation, can serve as an "alternative" to the modernity discourse and help develop the community of shared future for mankind. To present such a Chinese discourse paradigm to the world so that it can better contribute to global discourse diversity, strategies of textual-reasoning hermeneutic commentary and cultural comparisons are to be adopted to thick-translate the "local knowledge" of both the content and the discourse construction mechanism of Confucian classics.
