The Correlation Between Semantic Capacity and Translation Entropy
Abstract
Focusing on the relationship between the semantic capacity and the translation entropy of a source text within the framework of Saussure's "signifier" and "signified", the present paper is intended to illustrate the negative correlation between the semantic capacity and translation results, namely, the bigger the semantic capacity, the fewer possibilities of the translation results; conversely, the smaller the semantic capacity, the more diverse possibilities of the translation results. The quantitative study of the correlation between the semantic capacity and the translation entropy is useful in excavating the connotations of language in depth and in producing diversified translation versions so as to meet the needs of diverse target readers and realize varied communicative purposes.
