The Semantic Constraint on Verbs in Chinese Middle Sentence from the Perspective of Qualia Role

  • This paper discusses the eligibility of Chinese middle sentence and the semantic constraint on verbs.On the basis of some relevant literature, it firstly points out the deficiency of several existing interpretation schemes.Then from the perspective of qualia roles in the generative lexicon theory, it argues that qualia roles have an important effect on the semantic and syntactic eligibility of middle sentences.Middle construction is used to highlight the promoting function of attributes of things on the actions or states denoted by verbs or adjectives.Hence, the qualia roles of nouns are required to have a semantic co-construction and correlation with predicates.Only in this way can a middle sentence be established.
