Disagreement in Belief and Disagreement in Attitude:An Analysis on the Nature and Significance of Manipulation School’s Criticism on “Faithfulness”

  • This paper peruses the core texts of the manipulation school, analyses the nature of the disagreement between “manipulation” and “faithfulness”, examines the academic gains brought about by the manipulation school, and points out that the disagreement between “manipulation” and “faithfulness” concerns factual knowledge, not value position, and is therefore “disagreement in belief”, not “disagreement in attitude”.There is a large logical gap between doubting the “faithfulness” and “objectivity” of the translated text and giving up the pursuit of them.“Manipulation” reveals the opaque nature of translation, and helps to sensitize the translator to the constraining factors of translation, and is therefore meaningful both theoretically and practically.
