A Corpus-Based Diachronic Analysis of U.S.Media Reports of China During COVID-19 Pandemic

  • 摘要:本文在批评话语理论框架下,采用基于语料库的用法波动分析法,以新冠肺炎疫情大流行背景下美国媒体对华报道为例,对美媒针对中国国家形象的建构及其历时趋势进行考察,并借此讨论历时话语演变与政治、社会和意识形态之间的关系。研究发现:首先,美国媒体在新冠肺炎疫情背景下的涉华报道中所关注的涉华话题多样,兼具长期稳定、短期聚焦和阶段性反复的特点,但其反华基调不变;其次,其显著的历时趋势主要是受其国内政治活动和意识形态变化的影响。此外,用法波动分析对特定话题在特定历时时期的话语演变研究有显著的支撑性,但其具体的话语内部语义、语用结构和社会文化背景仍然需要辅以大量的定性分析才可做出更为明确的阐释。

    Abstract:Under the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this paper aims to reveal the construction of China's national image in the U.S. media and the diachronic changes during COVID-19 pandemic by using corpus-based Usage Fluctuation Analysis (UFA) method.It carries out a diachronic analysis of China-related news in U.S. web media in 2020, expecting to uncover the relationship between the longitudinal discourse change and the political, social and ideological background.The results are as follows: First, in the context of COVID-19, the U.S. media cover a variety of China-related topics, which are characterized by long-term stability, short-term focus and periodic repetitions, but the anti-China tone remains unchanged.Second, the dominant diachronic trend is mainly influenced by its domestic political activities and ideological changes.Usage Fluctuation Analysis method is effective for the description of discourse changes on a specific topic within a specific period of time.However, the qualitative analysis of underlying discourse semantics, pragmatic structure and socio-cultural background is still required to obtain a more explicit interpretation.
