Most scholars are trained in a suite of research methods appropriate to their academic field and topic of interest. However, few of us receive training in research data management. Other than data collection and data analysis, what else is necessary for long-term, successful scholarship? This is a particularly pressing issue due to the push for increased publication output and international recommendations for open science initiatives such as data sharing. Inthis talk, I discuss some of the issue around research data management with reference to different research paradigms, data types, and potential future re-use of data. Practical tips are offered for managing your data from initial data collection through project closure in order to support future research endeavours and open science initiatives.

Rita Elaine Silver
Rita Elaine Silver is the Director of the Education Research Funding Programme Office and Associate Professor in English Language and Literature at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. Her research is in the area of educational linguistics with specific interests in teacher education and teacher professional learning, classroom language learning and classroom discourse, multilingualism and language policy. She also regularly presents on issues related to academic publishing, research integrity & ethics, and open science initiatives in applied linguistics/educational research. Her recent publications have appeared Research Methods in Applied Linguistics; Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development; International Journal of Multilingualism; Journal of Language, Identity & Education; and, AERA Open. Her most recent edited collection is The Role of Language in Content Pedagogy: A Framework for Teachers’ Knowledge (with L. H. Seah & M. Baildon) (Springer, 2022). She is Co-editor of the journal Language & Education (Taylor & Francis).
